Poco a poco nos acercamos a nuestras bodas de plata. Lo que comenzó siendo un festival centrado en el mundo del cortometraje, ha experimentado un gran impulso en la última década, incorporando nuevas secciones competitivas centradas en óperas primas en largometraje y, más recientemente, en las series.
FICAL se ha convertido en el único certamen en nuestro país con esos tres ejes audiovisuales a concurso, secciones competitivas que se han complementado con otras de carácter informativo en las que, además de cine y series, hay una ventana para el documental. También se ha potenciado la presencia de figuras de la pantalla en diferentes mesas redondas.
Continuando nuestra premisa de superarnos en cada edición, llega FICAL 2025, en el que, junto a estas secciones ya consolidadas, incorporamos algunas nuevas, mientras tenemos en el horizonte la edición del próximo año, que sin duda será decisiva.
En este espectacular aumento de nuestro festival, hay un factor fundamental, el empuje de las instituciones locales y autonómicas, que permiten a la Diputación, principal motor del festival, seguir creciendo. Pero no debemos olvidar un elemento esencial, como es el público, que aumenta en cada edición y que es nuestra principal fuente de inspiración.
FICAL es un festival abierto a la provincia de Almería, con una variada oferta que permite que cualquier espectador/ra encuentre alguna actividad o título de su interés para que pueda disfrutar del séptimo arte tal y como se concibió: en pantalla grande. Estamos en unos tiempos difíciles para la exhibición cinematográfica y en estos momentos los festivales de cine se hacen aún más indispensables como plataforma de exhibición y como escuela de nuevos públicos. Por este motivo, con cada edición incrementamos nuestra oferta formativa e intentamos que en cada proyección haya invitados/das que sirvan de aliciente para atraer a esos cinéfilos a la oscuridad de las diferentes salas y conocer de cerca a esos creadores/ras y a las grandes figuras de la interpretación de nuestro país.
De nuevo el Teatro Cervantes, el Teatro Apolo, la Biblioteca Villaespesa y el Patio de Luces de la Diputación serán la casa de cientos de personas durante diez días, y todos los espectadores/ras podrán encontrar propuestas que les atraigan y que les hagan recordar por qué aman el cine. FICAL es el festival de Almería, con una programación pensada hasta el último detalle para que cada uno de esos espectadores anónimos encuentre algo que le atraiga y que le haga formar parte de este milagro anual.
Fiel a la línea iniciada hace una década, y consolidándose año a año, FICAL sigue manteniendo su espíritu original, con una programación amplia y diversa. Durante unos días seremos el centro cinematográfico del país, con cientos de invitados que acudirán para reflexionar en voz alta sobre su trayectoria e inquietudes, en un auténtico manjar cinéfilo.
Doce óperas primas, una treintena de cortometrajes y proyecciones especiales de series y largometrajes son la punta del iceberg de este evento que se complementa con clases magistrales, sesiones de DJ, estrenos, talleres, mesas redondas y, sobre todo, buen cine. Como ya he dicho en numerosas ocasiones, hay que vivir esta experiencia, y FICAL disfrutar de una cita imprescindible que está en rojo en los calendarios de cientos de personas.
FICAL contribuye a poner en valor nuestro pasado, presente y futuro como el mayor plató natural de Europa. En este sentido, es toda una celebración que el Premio Filming Almería recaiga en la serie más popular de nuestro país, La que se avecina, de Mediaset, cadena con la que el festival tiene fuertes lazos y que ha escogido nuestra provincia para el rodaje de su episodio más especial, el capítulo 200 , que podremos disfrutar en pantalla grande en la gala del Certamen Internacional de Cortometrajes Almería en Corto, en un acto que hace palpable la simbiosis que vive el audiovisual, donde los límites entre cine y series son cosa del pasado.
Ahora toca disfrutar de estos días e ir poniendo nuestra mente a trabajar para el 25 aniversario de nuestro festival en 2026.

We are gradually approaching our silver anniversary. What began as a festival focused on the world of short films has experienced a major boost in the last decade, incorporating new competitive sections focused on debut feature films and, more recently, series.
FICAL has become the only competition in our country with these three audiovisual categories, which have been complemented by other sections of an informative nature in which, in addition to films and series, there is a window for documentaries. The presence of screen personalities in various round tables has also been enhanced.
Continuing our premise of improving with each edition, FICAL 2025 is coming, in which, alongside these already established sections, we have incorporated some new ones, while we have next year’s edition on the horizon, which will undoubtedly be decisive.
In this spectacular growth of our festival, there is one fundamental factor: the support of local and regional institutions, which allows the Provincial Council, the main driving force behind the festival, to continue growing. But we must not forget an essential element, namely the audience, which increases with each edition and is our main source of inspiration.
FICAL is a festival open to the province of Almería, with a varied programme that allows any viewer to find an activity or film of interest to them so that they can enjoy the seventh art as it was conceived: on the silver screen. These are difficult times for film exhibition, and film festivals are now even more indispensable as a platform for exhibition and as a school for new audiences. That is why, with every edition, we increase our educational offering and try to ensure that each screening has guests who act as an incentive to attract film lovers to the darkness of the different cinemas and get to know these creators and the great figures of Spanish film up close.
Once again, the Cervantes Theatre, the Apolo Theatre, the Villaespesa Library and the Patio de Luces (Lightwell) at the Provincial Council will be home to hundreds of people for ten days, and all viewers will be able to find something that appeals to them and reminds them why they love films. FICAL is Almería’s festival, with a programme planned down to the last detail so that each of these anonymous spectators can find something that appeals to them and that will make them part of this annual miracle.
In keeping with the approach, it began a decade ago, and consolidating its position year after year, FICAL has maintained its original spirit, with a wide-ranging and diverse programme. For a few days, we will be the country’s film centre, with hundreds of guests coming to reflect out loud on their careers and concerns, in a real treat for film lovers.
Twelve debut films, around thirty short films and special screenings of series and feature films are just the tip of the iceberg of this event, which is complemented by masterclasses, DJ sessions, premieres, workshops, round tables and, above all, good filmmaking. As I have said on numerous occasions, this is an experience that must be savoured, and FICAL is an unmissable event that is marked in red on the calendars of hundreds of people.
FICAL helps to highlight our past, present and future as the largest natural film set in Europe. In this regard, it is a real celebration that the Filming Almería Award has gone to the most popular series in our country, La que se avecina, by Mediaset, a channel with which the festival has strong ties and which has chosen our province for the filming of its most special episode to date, episode 200, which we will be able to enjoy on the big screen at the Almería en Corto International Short Film Competition gala, in an event that makes the symbiosis between audiovisual media palpable, where the boundaries between cinema and series are a thing of the past.
Now it’s time to enjoy these days and start thinking about the 25th anniversary of our festival in 2026.
