PREMIO «ALMERÍA, TIERRA DE CINE»: JOHN RHYS-DAVIES
A sus 81 años, este actor británico ha pasado sin duda a la historia del cine por su participación en dos de las sagas cinematográficas por excelencia. Nos referimos a Indiana Jones y El Señor de los Anillos.
Su interpretación del arqueólogo Sallah en tres de las películas de la saga protagonizada por Harrison Ford es muy recordada por los seguidores de la serie, empezando por En busca del arca perdida. Precisamente en Almería rodó Indiana Jones y la última cruzada, título fundamental en la lista de producciones que han visitado nuestra provincia, con momentos memorables en Tabernas y en la propia capital almeriense. Hace dos años estrenaba Indiana Jones y el dial del destino, donde su personaje ganaba protagonismo y cerraba magistralmente las aventuras de nuestro héroe favorito sin traicionar el espíritu de Spielberg.
Por otra parte, muchos le recordarán por su interpretación del enano Gimli en la trilogía de El Señor de los Anillos de Peter Jackson, así como la voz de Bárbol en la misma película. Su personalidad ruda fue deliberadamente exagerada, creando momentos de comicidad que sirven para descargar de drama la trama principal de la historia. Precisamente esta interpretación le sirvió para ganar el premio al mejor actor de reparto del sindicato de actores por El retorno del rey, tras haber sido nominado por las dos anteriores películas de la saga.
Otros títulos de su larga filmografía son Las minas del rey Salomón, Princesa por sorpresa, Aventuras en el Sahara, Regreso al mundo perdido, 007 Alta tensión, Víctor o Victoria o, en los ochenta, la primera versión de la serie Shogun.

At 81 years of age, this British actor has undoubtedly gone down in cinema history for his participation in two of the most iconic film sagas of all time: Indiana Jones and The Lord of the Rings.
His portrayal of archaeologist Sallah in three of the films in the series starring Harrison Ford is well remembered by fans of the series, starting with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, a key film in the list of productions to have visited our province, was shot in Almería, with memorable moments in Tabernas and in the capital of Almería itself. Two years ago, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was released, in which his character took centre stage and masterfully brought our favourite hero’s adventures to a close without betraying the spirit of Spielberg’s.
Many will remember him for his portrayal of the dwarf Gimli in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as the voice of Treebeard in the same film. His rough personality was deliberately exaggerated, creating moments of comedy that served to lighten the drama of the main plot of the story. It was precisely this performance that earned him the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Return of the King, after being nominated for the two previous films in the series.
Other titles in his long filmography include King Solomon’s Mines, The Princess Diaries, Sahara, Return to the Lost World, The Living Daylights, Victor/Victoria
and, in the 1980s, the first version of the series Shogun.
